Have you ever felt completely overwhelmed by the workload, responsibility and time demands associated with your job?
The other morning, I came to the realization that I was becoming a bit overwhelmed and irritable and needed an outlet for all of the stress of my business. Later that day, while in the checkout line at the market, a copy of SHAPE Magazine caught my eye. I flipped through the pages and stumbled upon an article that inspired me. It said,
“Northern Illinois University researchers found that managers who exercised for just 30 minutes, 1 or 2 times a week, were less likely to be abusive toward their subordinates than their sedentary counterparts. Lead author James Burton, Ph.D. said, ‘Being active buffers the tendency to have outbursts.’
The article also explained that exercise minimizes the negative effects of stress, reducing the heart rate and improving overall mood. With this information and my newfound enthusiasm, I signed up for classes at the local yoga studio.
My schedule is extremely hectic and I know if I manage my time wisely I can squeeze in 2 or 3 classes a week. The realization of carving out this time is crucial to my mental and physical well-being. In addition, it will allow to me to be more productive and cohesive with my clients and associates. If you are “chained” to your desk, how can you reduce stress and improve the work environment for yourself and colleagues?
Here are 4 fitness tips for getting exercise while in the office.
1) Deliver emails in person: Every time you get up from your desk and walk, you are doing something positive for your body. Don’t use email as an excuse for being lazy. Get up, walk across the office and deliver your message in person whenever appropriate.
2) Take the stairs: Forgo the elevator a few times a day. Those who work in tall office buildings can simply get off the elevator several flights beneath their floor!
3) Check out the stability ball chairs: Not only comfortable, these chairs help to strengthen your core muscles and improve your posture.
4) Pedal while you work: Desk cycles are gaining in popularity. They allow you to inconspicuously and quietly burn calories and get aerobic exercise.
From conference room aerobics to lunch-hour speed walking teams, organized opportunities can also benefit individuals at every level — as well as entire departments. What is your firm doing to pump up workforce fitness? After all, since managers who exercise are less abusive, providing an exercise outlet may improve coworker relationships. And a better work environment enhances productivity, and may reduce turnover.
